Giancarlo Stanton Placed on IL, Will Further Push Yankees at Trade Deadline

The Yankees have announced that Giancarlo Stanton has been placed on the 10-Day IL retroactive from July 24th, leaving him off the active roster until after the trade deadline. Exhaustion has turned into left Achilles tendonitis for Stanton and Yankees management seemed it fit to give the 2022 All-Star Game MVP some time to recover.

It was reported by Yankees Beat Reporter Bryan Hoch that Giancarlo Stanton requested an MRI yesterday (Monday) that showed tendinitis in his Achilles, according to Aaron Boone. The initial timeframe for his return is 2-3 weeks, though that’s just a loose estimate.

This is obviously not what you want but placing Stanton on the Injured List gives an opportunity to get other guys consistent at bats and potentially force the Yankees to make more moves at the deadline. It was already reported that the team was already looking into corner outfield help once the deadline arrived, but this may push them to make the deal a little sooner than the August 2nd deadline. New York has been rumored to be the favorites to land Kansas City Royals Outfielder Andrew Benintendi.

Could this make the Yankees push for more, or even something more costly like Juan Soto? That may be unlikely, especially since the recent injury to bullpen piece Michael King, who was having a great season and arguably was a snub for this year’s all-star game.

The Bronx Bombers are off to a great start heading into the deadline, a start that not many predicted in a difficult AL East division. This team is succeeded incredibly better than the same time last year when Yankees GM Brian Cashman traded for big pieces such as Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo. You have to assume he is not going to remain dormant this season when they may possess their best chances at returning to the Fall Classic, which they have not made an appearance since 2009.
