Aaron Ashby and the Milwaukee Brewers have come to terms on a most important extension, a sign of trust in the young left hander. Saturday, the club announced the extension that will keep him in Milwaukee for years to come.
New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports that the Aaron Ashby extension goes through the 2027 season, with team options in both 2028 and 2029. The contract could be worth up to $46 million, depending on the 2028 and 2029 team options.
Reaping What You Sow with Aaron Ashby
Not enough can be said about Milwaukee’s ability to grow their pitching prospects from within. Ashby came into 2018 as the top LHP prospect in baseball. However, behind Ashby, the vast majority of the Brewers prospect pipeline has been called “uninspiring” by Baseball America. This places further emphasizes the need to extend prospects, if you can still call him that, like Ashby. This is a big win for Milwaukee and Aaron Ashby, who was emotional while speaking on the extension before his outing vs. Colorado.
What to Expect From Ashby
Aaron has developed into a big swing and miss guy, and ranks among the upper echelon pitchers in the league in that department.
Ashby has the stuff to develop into a No. 2 or 3 starter, but improving his fastball command will be critical to realize his middle of the rotation potential. His walk rate will naturally improve over time but right now it’s not where Milwaukee would like for it to be. Ashby’s K rate nears 27% but his walk rate is just a tick over 10%.
Ethan Small was called up recently by the Brewers. All hopes are that his path is similar to that of Ashby. Entering 2022, Ashby and Small, respectively, were scouted to have the best slider and changeup in the Brewers pipeline. It only goes up from here.
