What to Know About Royals New Prospect: Beck Way

One of the first big trades has occurred late Wednesday night with the trade that sent Andrew Benintendi to the New York Yankees for three pitching prospects. One of the prospects is Beck Way. At the time of the trade, MLB Pipeline listed Way as the 21st prospect in the New York Yankees system. Way seems to have the highest ceiling of the three pitchers moved to Kansas City in this trade.

Beck Way was drafted by the Yankees in the 4th round of the 2020 MLB Draft and selected 129th overall. In his two seasons in the New York organization, he has played for Class-A Tampa and High-A Hudson Valley. Way has made 34 appearances in his minor league career for 135.2 innings pitched.

Currently this season, Way has gone 5-5 with a 3.73 ERA in 15 appearances for High-A Hudson Valley. He has thrown 80 strikeouts and walked only 26 batters in 72.1 innings of work. His latest start was on July 23rd as he went 6.0 innings, 0 hits, 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.

His success in the Cape Cod league in 2020 prompted Way to transfer to a Junior College (Northwest Florida State JC) so we would be eligible for the 2020 Draft.

According to MLB Pipeline, Way has gained velocity in his past few seasons with his four-seam fastball topping off at 99mph. Although some control issues have shown that Way may suffer from a lack of consistency on the mound, he shows a vast amount of potential.

His lack of control and command caused New York kept him in extended spring training for most of May last year so he could work on locating his pitches. Some see him as more of a reliever type once fully produced due to these intangibles, but with his past success in JuCo as a starter, it would be ideal to build him up while lower in the system.
