New on the Scene – Remission

New on the Scene – Remission
Remission – Premiers on Youtube on July 1, 12pm Central

It’s Getting Hot in Here

While working on a preview for the upcoming comedy/horror Curse of the Weredeer, I met a lot of great folks involved in the project. Between reconnecting with an old high school classmate, Ben Johnson, who directed Weredeer, and European Football chatter with Jazmyn Hanks, I found that everyone has much to offer in terms of sheer entertainment. Jazmyn, I promise, that Bundesliga coverage is coming to SlasherSports! One of those interactions led me to learn of Remission, A short film written and directed by Ben Schatzel that happens to be premiering very soon.

Remission is a sci-fi horror which takes place in a remote research facility in Antarctica. Oliver and Maggie Rothschild, leading virology researches, discover a rare virus which may permanently change our planet.

The film will premiere on YouTube on Friday July 1st at 12:00 pm CT via the Stacked Deck Studios YouTube account.

A Chat with Ben Schatzel, Writer and Director of Remission

SlasherSports: One of my favorite genre of film is the Kaiju film, namely Godzilla, and Godzilla was originally meant as an allegory, sort of a metaphor for the dangers of nuclear energy. In a very different but similar way, is remission rooted in the perils of some real world issues?

Ben: Remission is absolutely inspired by socially-focused films like Godzilla, The Stuff and They Live as well as more modern films like Get Out and Parasite. I think that a strong metaphor is a strong foundation for any horror film, whether that be playing on a personal fear such as fear of the dark or a fear of spiders, or a societal fear such as climate change, in this case.

SS: What do you and your team hope to achieve with Remission?

Ben:  I think the primary goal of any passion project film is to tell the best story possible with people that you love to work with. I feel like we succeeded at that goal and no matter what happens with this film long-term, I will always view it as a success. Beyond that, I hope that this can contribute to the larger conversation of using artistic expression as a form of rebellion. Much like comedy, I think that the greatest horror punches up at the establishment. I take a lot of inspiration from independent artists with a punk rock attitude, and if I have one singular goal for the reception of this project it is to hopefully help inspire somebody to create a piece of art as a way to communicate what they are fighting for.
