Did You See It? Speak No Evil

Did You See It? Speak No Evil

Speak No Evil is a tough one! It’s a foreign horror film but the good thing about this movie is if you have problems with subtitles, it doesn’t require a lot of effort. Subtitles are used strategically and they’re few and far between.

It’s mostly English spoken, but you’re gonna have a couple times where they break off into different dialects and the subtitles are there. It won’t overwhelm you. You can watch and relax without worry if subtitles normally distract you.

The trailer really spells this one out. You’re getting about what you expect, but it’s done well enough that any previews you may have seen don’t feel overly revealing or set a false expectation. It does a really good job with no surprises other than the lengths the captor or captors will go to to play their little game.

In case you haven’t been hip to this one, there are two families, Dutch and Danish, who meet on holiday. You know it’s a European film because I said “holiday” instead of vacation. The two families seem to like each other, sharing pleasantries, almost feeling too polite.

As the film wears on, the host couple, after inviting the protagonist to their country home, become more and more agitating, more obnoxious showing these little micro aggressions. That’s until they turn into really big aggressions. This is this is all in the trailer. Nothing I’m telling you is new information.

The “bad” husband, when they meet the good couple, he says he’s a doctor. Later on, he contradicts himself and says he lied. Just a big red flag right there in their faces. This is generally when you know the shit is going to his the fan.

You get these vibes from the host couple that the viewer knows all to well. It leads us to simply wait and see how initially awkward, and later aggressive, they get. Aggressive grinding on the dance floor in front of the guest couple is a prime example. The host couple have a son who was “born without a tongue”. Your initial reaction to this is the right one. Yes, before we even know why, we know why. These examples pile up throughout the film and each makes you more uncomfortable.

These are the things that keep me from accepting invites from anyone I know. Like, you know, in case we’re in the local Chili’s, and the guys bricked up dancing next to his lady next to the salad bar. I don’t even know if there’s a salad bar at Chili’s. Forget what you heard about Speak No Evil. This is one you want to see.

While I mentioned the trailer giving you about what you expect, have no worries. They leave plenty out for you to come away disturbed. There are still major developments, some gut wrenching cinema, and plenty of chills.
