Brewers Host Cardinals, Game 2 Preview

After a fast start and a dominant bounceback performance from Brandon Woodruff, the Brewers defended home turf against division rival Cardinals on Thursday. Friday, the Brewers host the Cardinals as they look to do the same with Freddy Peralta on the hill.

Freddy vs. Cardinals

Collectively, this squad of St. Louis Cardinals have hit well against Peralta in the past. In 111 at-bats, the Cards have a .270 batting average and an .865 OPS. They have also notched 7 home runs during that time, with Nolan Arenado having taken Peralta deep with 3 of those.

Seven Cardinals hitters have faced Peralta eleven times or more, so Peralta will need to rely on what’s brought him to the dance. There is a clear distinction in Peralta’s past when he somewhat struggled and when he became the all-star level pitcher we know today. Fastball Freddy does enjoy a 31% K rate vs. this Cardinal lineup.

Freddy Peralta looks to face a Cardinals lineup who has had his number.

Notable Hitters vs. Peralta

Nolan Arenado – In 16 AB vs. Peralta, Arenado has slashed .313/.353/.875 with 3 HR

Paul Goldschmidt – In 14 AB, Goldy displays a dominant .429/.500/1.000 slash with 2 HR and a mere 14% SO rate

Paul DeJong – With a more than respectable .273 batting average, he boasts a slugging percentage over .540, better than anyone on the Cardinals team not named Arenado or Goldschmidt.

Brewers vs. Miles Mikolas

Miles Mikolas faces a Brewers squad who comes in hot.

In 83 total ABs vs. Cardinals RHP Miles Mikolas, the Brewers have a middle of the road batting average, but very little power has been exhibited. In fact, they only show a .133 ISO against Mikolas. That means only 13% of Milwaukee’s basehits against the righty have resulted in any kind of extra bases. The Brewers will depend heavily on the momentum from Thursday, when Kolten Wong, Christian Yelich, Rowdy Tellez, and Omar Narvaez seemingly couldn’t be retired.

Milwaukee has only struck out 17% of the time vs. Mikolas and that, if nothing else, should give them the confidence to know they can put the ball in play and create scoring opportunities.
