Can’t Keep a Good Man Down

Both the Nashville Sounds and Gwinnett Stripers would be wearing their Copa de la Diversion unis on Wednesday. We would know them that night as the Vihuelas de Nashville y los Xolos de Gwinnett!

While it seemed the comeback was about to happen on Tuesday, the Sounds would fall just 90 ft. short of tying the game. That would not be the case on Wednesday as the Sounds would not be denied.

It was game 2 of the Sounds trip to Coolray Field to face the Gwinnett Stripers.

Jamie Westbrook Traded to Detroit for Cash

Following minor league baseball, one acclimates oneself to promotions and demotions and understands that goodbyes come with the territory. Unexpected trades are a different monster altogether. Westbrook was traded to the Detroit Tigers for cash considerations after having gone 5 for 10 on the season. We at Slasher Sports wish Jamie the best in his career. He was not on the Milwaukee Brewers 40-man roster, but did spend the last 2 seasons with the Nashville Sounds.

Dylan File on the Bump

Scouting grades: Fastball: 45 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 55 | Overall: 40

Looking to bounce back from a shaky start against reigning Triple A champion Durham, File would find no relief. Gwinnett would frustrate File by taking 5 ER from the Brewers #24 prospect.

The scouting report on File reflects a below average fastball, though it stays around 92-93mph most nights. His above average slider is his out pitch, which stays in the high 70s to low 80s. File’s calling card is his ability to throw strikes, shown by an above average 55 scouting grade. Control would not always be there for File, however, as three bases were awarded in the 4 innings pitched.

File struck out the first batter of the game, but never notched another strikeout for the rest of the night. He hopes to fare better in his next start which figures to be next week, at home vs. Charlotte.

Brewers Top 30 Prospects

Brice Turang

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 60 | Arm: 55 | Field: 60 | Overall: 50

Brewers #4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline Brice Turang would go 0-5 in this one. Assuredly, to the naked eye, it simply appears that Turang simply lacks the power to put any real drive on the ball when he does make contact. However, what the Brewers saw in him was a potential once he does grow into his frame. At 22, there is time. TODAY: 0-5, 1 R, 1 SO

Mario Feliciano

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 55 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

The Brewers, and Sounds honestly, are still waiting for 2019 Feliciano to show up. That season, Mario would be Carolina League MVP. Since then, he’s had a shoulder injury that is possibly a cause for concern, only due to fear that it might reflect a durability issue, as he had a similar issue in 2018 that required surgery. Thus far, he’s stayed healthy with a trusty set of backups in Brian Navarreto and newly signed Alex Jackson. TODAY: 1-4, 1 1B, 1 SO

At 6’s and 7’s

The Sounds were kept relatively quiet for the first 7 innings of the ballgame, after beating up on SP Dylan File. RP’s Hobie Harris,Trevor Kelley, and Miguel Sanchez would come on to slow down the onslaught. The Sounds were held to only two hits in that time, but then the 8th inning happened.

Weston Wilson would draw a walk and immediately take 2nd base on a passed ball and ultimately score on a Monasterio RBI single. Defensive alignment would bite the Stripers as a seemingly routine bounce to short would result in no out as Monasterio beat the throw to 2nd.

Brice Turang would reach 1st on a fielder’s choice, followed by a single up the 1st base line by Abe Almonte. Enter known speed-demon, Jon Singleton. Yes, I know. Singleton would drive the first pitch into the RF corner for a bases clearing triple, putting the Sounds one run behind Gwinnett. On the very next pitch, LF David Dahl would hit a solo shot, tying the ballgame at 5.

Add Insurance and Lock it Up

Corey Ray would follow up with a stand up double to the LF/CF gap, over the head of Delino DeShields Jr. With the Sounds having bat around, Weston Wilson would make his second appearance of the inning and make good with a liner to center, scoring Ray, and giving Nashville a 2 run lead, one that would put a stamp on the scoring for the night.

Former closer Luke Barker and apparent current closer Luis Perdomo would close the door on Gwinnett in the 8th and 9th, respectively. It was truly a night of feast and famine for the Nashville Sounds, but all’s well that ends well and this one ended well. Final Score: 7-5, Nashville Sounds.

Affiliates

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 on some late game heroics from Kolten Wong, Rowdy Tellez, and Hunter Renfroe. A masterful outing from Corbin Burnes would lead the Brewers to a 2-1 series victory.

The Biloxi Shuckers won in walk-off style and put on a clinic of plate discipline in the 9th. A bases loaded walk by Tristen Lutz would get the win 3-2.

The Carolina Mudcats would rout the FredNats (Fredericksburg Nationals), by a score of 13-6, putting up a 7 run inning of their own, in the top of the 8th.

It was a clean sweep for the Brewers affiliates, although the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers would be PPD.
